How to Stop a Miniature Schnauzer Puppy Jumping on Furniture

How to Stop a Miniature Schnauzer Puppy Jumping on FurnitureHow to stop a Miniature Schnauzer puppy jumping all over the furniture and making a nuisance of him or herself?  As wonderful as Miniature Schnauzers are, they can be full of mischief and delight in romping on the best furniture.

The good news is, with training a puppy the right way you can stop this mischievous behavior.

Miniature Schnauzers are delightful dogs and add much pleasure to family life, as well as being great company for people living on their own.  The Mini Schnauzer is friendly, faithful, and loving. Together with those characteristics, the Mini Schnauzer puppy is full of fun and loves plenty of activity.

These puppies are big on pleasing their owner, and respond to any signal that resembles a chance for playtime.  Because of their generosity with play, we need to be clear with letting our Miniature Schnauzer puppy know what we expect in the way of behavior.

Help Your Miniature Schnauzer to Settle In to His New Home

In fairness to a puppy, in your role as owner and leader, you need to set the rules and teach puppy what those rules are.  That training needs to be in place right from the first day you bring puppy into your home.

For example, when we first adopt a new young puppy it is normal to make a fuss of this little dog.  During the first weeks, while he/she is very small and getting familiar with new surroundings, without realizing, we may not be setting the best examples or rules for our puppy.

We sit down in a comfortable chair, then pick puppy up off the floor and sit him/her on our lap.  This happens many times, and puppy gets used to it.   This is comfortable and fun to a small puppy.

Now the example is already set.  This chair, or that couch is a great place for jumping on, or even having a sleep, puppy thinks.

So How ARE You Going to Stop Your Miniature Schnauzer Puppy Jumping on Furniture?

Rather than having puppy sit with you in chair, a much better option is to sit on the floor and play with your puppy.

If the floor isn’t the most comfortable place for you to sit, make the effort to change that with cushions or something similar.

What you are doing here is teaching your Miniature Schnauzer that the floor is a great place for having fun with you, or anyone else wanting to join in.

Stop Your Miniature Schnauzer Puppy Jumping by Keeping the Rules You Have Set

So as not to confuse your puppy, start training right from the time he first comes into your home.   It is kinder to gently let your puppy know the rules right from the beginning.

Be Consistent With Your Use of Words

Use the same words for certain behavior. By using those same words, puppy won’t be confused.

For instance, saying NO and pointing your index finger at the same time would be ideal when puppy tries to jump on the couch, chair or other furniture.

If you use the word NO each time puppy tries to jump on something he is not allowed to, then that is the first step in training your puppy.

Ignoring Your Puppy is Okay

If puppy continues to try jumping on the furniture, say NO, and turn your head away.  Don’t look puppy in the eye.  Show him that you are not interested in what he is doing.

If puppy gets the message that he is not allowed on the furniture, but continues to plead with you, this could be a good time to get on the floor and play with him.

By continually refusing to let puppy jump on the furniture, and choosing to sit on the floor, you are giving puppy obedience training which will prove to be of benefit with future training.

Your Miniature Schnauzer is Special

Of course your Miniature Schnauzer puppy is special to you.  Miniature Schnauzers are beautiful dogs that give so much pleasure to so many people.

However, it doesn’t matter how special or how wonderful a dog is, each one needs to be well trained.

Even the most devoted dog lovers do not enjoy the company of badly behaved dogs.  Don’t let that be your puppy!

Give your Miniature Schnauzer puppy the very best of training. He will reward you with his loyalty, obedience and fun times together.

  1. Hi Valerie
This is a great post and very informative. I’ve always liked schnauzers and would love to have one one day. We want to get a dog soon but we haven’t decided which kind (my boyfriend wants a big dog, ie labrador) and I’m torn because it would be easier to have a small dog. Do you think what you’ve written on this post (how to train schnauzer puppies) can be applicable to puppies of all kinds?

    • Hi Ayako,

Thanks very much for visiting this post and I’m pleased to know you found it helpful.

The foundation, or basics, of puppy training is pretty much the same for all dogs. In saying that, some breeds are more excitable, or more stubborn, than others. For instance, as adorable as Miniature Schnauzers are when your compare them to say the Labrador breed, there is a noticeable difference in behavior traits. Labradors are quite placid in nature, whereas the Miniature Schnauzer is more excitable. But, still wonderful!

  2. Greetings Valerie,

Oh, it was such a delight to read your post! I never thought about the habits I could be ingraining into a puppy, by the simple act of picking them up when sitting on a chair or couch!!!

My housemates and I have casually talked about adopting a puppy, so your site would definitely be very helpful.

    Thanks, Valerie!

    • Greetings to you Veronica, and thank you for visiting my website.

I am so pleased to know you enjoyed the post and received benefit from it. Yes, it is so easy to spoil our pets because of our love for them. In the case of dogs, it is a pity to spoil them because they are easily trained when we use the right skills.

All the best to you and your housemates when you adopt your puppy. It will be an exciting and wonderful time in your lives.
